Dance and music traditionally unite in popular culture. The fact that our culture and nature are very much alive and kicking make music and dance an indispensable part of our day to day lives.
Although the meaning of the title, Arineketan (literally ‘running’ in Basque), would seem to indicate otherwise, this album is not the result of an improvised sprint. It is the fruit of a long-standing relationship and reflects a shared desire to create music. Both of us have participated from a very young age in different dance groups, whether as musicians or as dancers. Our inspiration was the legendary book by the folklorist Juan Ignacio Iztueta, published in 1824, on “the history of ancient melodies and dances from Gipuzkoa”. Iztueta’s collection of music helped us to create new works related to traditional Basque rhythms and dances. What follows is quite simply musical fun, enjoyment, jokes and laughs. The txistu and the piano meet and separate. The initiative gave us an excuse to dust down old Basque folklore songs and in so doing to provide material for the dance groups which now strive to modernise their repertoire.
Jagoba Astiazaran
It seems that as a child he fell into the pot of music as Jagoba faces any musical challenge with some ease. He has great knowledge of both academic and popular music and his greatest virtue is the taste for sharing and enjoying it with people. Although it is difficult for him to find a hole in his busy schedule since he is usually immersed in different projects, he always tries to find time to be generous with others.
Its central axis is the Municipal Band of Txistularis de San Sebastián. Along with this, we must not forget his facet as an innovative teacher. He has won important awards for composition and research both at home and abroad. His creations are just as multifaceted, he always shows a different facet of his character, be it making traditional, contemporary or popular music. He has written for symphony orchestras such as those of Bilbao and Euskadi, for txistu groups or for recognized ensembles on the European scene.
Iñar Sastre
The music is transmitted directly from the ear to the fingers in Iñar’s case. Specialized in piano and classical improvisation between San Sebastián and Paris, he is capable of internalize and take hold of all the music you listen to and savor. It makes all the styles it draws its own. The seven discs that he has recorded are the faithful reflection of that variety, which travels from traditional music to international pop, through classical and contemporary music.
But his greatest treasure is creativity, which feeds on his guts and roots, as can be seen in the music he has created for documentaries such as “Euskara munduan” or the dance show “NAN”. Your concern always leads you to give back to the people what they drink from, adding what their hands sift.
